Big Red was a special baby from the start as he had died at birth and me Mum resuscitated him and gave him his life back with her own breath .. me Mum is a special lady! One day Rose saw Mum coming towards her to look at her 4 beautiful babies .. when all of a sudden .. Rose jumped up with excitement but she accidently stood on Big Red .. crushing his chest ..he died at the doctors 8 hours later from a hemorrhage .. we buried our poor darling in the same grave as his other sisters and brothers that had died at birth .. we planted a 'Cats Whisker' [that's an Aussie plant] over the grave .. this was a sad and devastating day for Me .. my Rose and me Mum!

Carburg Blazing Jewel Born: 20.06.2000
Died: 9.11.2002

Jewels death was an accident but we can't help thinking
"If Only or What If"
Jewel
Allen and Jewel spent most of their days out at the property in a large Industrial Shed .. now we are talking about a shed large enough to accommodate four parked semi-trailers .. Allen had one part of the shed turned into accommodation .. they had all the comforts of home when they were there with enough love to fill the whole shed.

Jewels last months: Allen was driving to work and found Jewel was following the car up the road so he had to place mesh against the door of their home .. this was for her own safety while Allen was at the mine working .. Allen always returned to find Jewel waiting for him .. although I am not sure if it was Allen or the left over food in his lunch box .. Jewel knew Allen always left her something to eat but if Allen didn't hand the lunch box over as soon as he arrived home Jewel would remove the lunch box from his bag .. take the lid off and eat what ever Allen had left for her. When Allen had night shift he always made sure Jewel was comfortable and placed the mesh across the door so she couldn't get out and be hurt .. early morning on the 9th November 2002 he received a police call at 3.40am to alert him to the fact there had been a fire out at the property. The first thing Allen asked "Is my dog OK?" .. Allen called me and my first question was "Is Jewel OK?" His answer was "The police can't find her" .. that left us with a glimmer of hope .. although deep down I knew she hadn't made it .. Allen returned to the property immediately and I arrived soon after .. hoping to greet Allen and Jewel together .. by 6.30am we received the devastating news that Jewel had been found .. fortunately two of Allen's friends found her little body and placed it in the grave beside the two babies Jewel had lost at birth on Father's Day 2002 .. these friends knew that the sight of Jewel would be too much for Allen and myself to bare.

The following information I wish we had never heard .. but the facts are the facts and there is nothing we can do to change it .. I will try to tell it with out being too distressed!

The first person on the scene had noticed Jewel by the far door barking and trying to get out of the tin sliding door .. they had plenty of time to run through and get her as fire was at this point was only at the new fridge near the door where the mesh had been placed .. another person stopped the first person from going in and saving Jewel .. then the suggestion to open the opposite door bought protests that the oxygen would escalate the fire .. I'll never understand WHY!! .. when there was a 20 foot wide door open next to the fire .. these lousy decisions made by one person contributed to Jewels life ending with smoke and finally flames. The ones who made the decisions will have to live with what they decided was the best course of action they took until the day they die .. Allen and I have to live with the knowledge of what this girl went through and the terrifying minutes Jewel encountered before her death in this fire when all they had to do was open a door or just walk past the small fire at the time and take her out.
A neighbour bought over a caravan for Allen to live in until he could get things together .. as we stood talking .. I had my back to the caravan door I heard Jewel's voice not once but twice that day .. anyone who has had a staffy in their family can tell you they are renowned for making very suspicious sounds that can be mistaken for words .. I even looked around to see if she was behind me .. I believe she was just telling me "Hey Mum it's OK .. I'm not far away .. just look up .. I'm running my part of Staffie Heaven with my two babies." We will always remember Jewel for her unique ways as she was so different .. so intelligent in many ways to any other I have ever had in my kennels.
Smile my Darling For now it is Goodbye Jewel .. may you rest in peace .. knowing you were always loved by both Daddy and Mummy and all the people whose lives you touched with that huge smile .. your special qualities can never be replaced by another .. you took part of your Dad and Mum with you that day my darling .. we will never forget you.
